Are you passionate about improving opportunities for children and young people in your local community? Could you bring your skills, experience and perspectives to help shape the future of one of our schools?
Alliance Schools Trust is seeking volunteer Community Governors to join our Local School Boards. We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and professions who are committed to supporting educational excellence and making a positive difference.
Being a governor is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the success of a local school while developing valuable leadership, strategic and governance skills.
What Does a Community Governor Do?
Governors work with school leaders and the Trust to provide strategic oversight and support. They do not become involved in the day-to-day running of the school, but instead focus on the bigger picture, helping to ensure:
- Every child receives the best possible education.
- The school is ambitious for all pupils.
- Resources are used effectively and responsibly.
- Leaders are appropriately supported and challenged.
- The school reflects and serves the needs of its community.
As a member of a Local School Board, you will help monitor school performance, champion the interests of pupils, and contribute to discussions that support continuous improvement.
Who Can Apply?
We are keen to hear from people from a wide range of backgrounds, including those with experience in:
- Business and management
- Finance and auditing
- Human resources
- Marketing and communications
- Legal services
- Project management
- Information technology
- Public services
- Charity and voluntary sectors
However, governance experience is not required. The most important qualities are a commitment to young people, an ability to work collaboratively, good judgement, and a willingness to learn.
We are particularly keen to attract governors whose backgrounds and experiences reflect the diverse communities our schools serve.
Time Commitment
The role is voluntary and typically involves:
- Attendance at around three Local School Board meetings each year
- Reading papers and preparing for meetings
- Occasional school visits and training sessions
Most governors find the commitment is manageable alongside employment and other responsibilities.
Training and Support
No previous governance experience is necessary. Comprehensive induction, training and ongoing support are provided by the Trust’s Governance Team to help you succeed in the role.
